Campus Style: Summer Swimwear

by Michael B. Mohn on July 6, 2009

So Summer is finally here. You’ve finished finals, found a job, have been working out, and hopefully thrown out your Hydroxycut (after that article I don’t think I’ll ever touch the stuff again!). With that said, that hard earned beach body is going to be looking for the proper swim suit to compliment it. Here at the Campus Throne we have provided our style expertise and opinion on today’s most popular swimwear. Whether or not you’re as into beach fashion as we are, you should benefit from these style tips.

Speedos

It’s best we just get this out of the way now. Do NOT wear a Speedo. Lets face it, if your rocking a Speedo at the beach or at a pool party, well, quite frankly…you’re an asshole. Speedos are used for an athletic purpose. Men who wear Speedos do so because it enchances the  dynamics of a humans body in water, thus increasing speed and overall performance. They also  don’t quite live up to our culture standards here in America. Unlike Europe, it is socially unacceptable and to be honest quite uncomfortable to turn around only to be exposed to a steaming pile of bulge.  Overall, the Campus Throne only condones the wearing of Speedos if it is for athletic purpose. If you’re man enough to shave your legs to enhance swim speed, then your man enough to wear a Speedo. Just do us a favor and keep this within closed swimming quarters.

Swim Trunks

These classic swim suits have been around since before we were born and they will probably continue to be  for quite some time. Although accepted in general, there are still some things to keep in mind while wearing these at the pool or the beach. Swim trunks are good for the guy who doesn’t exactly, like many of us, have a washboard  abdominal region. I say this because unlike board shorts, swim trunks don’t hang flat under the belly therefore accentuating the size of ones stomach. Also, wearing dark trunks with less vibrant designs keeps attention away from the stomach as well. The only personal problem I have with swim trunks is the inner lining. Sometimes they can be restrictive and irritating which can hinder mobilty, especially if you get sand in there. Overall, swim trunks have been a standard in American swimwear. If you’re cool with wearing them, then we are too.

Board Shorts

And finally, the new age, in style form of swimwear. Originating from surfers and other water sport enthusiasts, board shorts have come to swim suit power by that of their unrivaled comfort. Board shorts are fashionable, comfortable, offer great mobility, and also keep your “danger zone”  in modest view while cruising the beach. They also fit well to the guy who really takes care of his body. If you are an artistically expressive person, board shorts are the swim suit for you. Today’s board short styles exhibit vibrant patterns, flowers, and other tropical designs. And yes, it is OK to have some tropical flowers on your swim gear as it is quite popular. Better yet, board shorts can be worn anywhere. Whether you are on the beach or walking the street, board shorts hang at or below the knee and are fashionably acceptable. In essence, you really can’t go wrong with this swim apparel. In a country of ever changing style, we here at the Campus Throne are happy to say that board shorts are here to stay.

Overall swim suits aren’t the biggest concern of the summer, but they are something to keep in mind when you venture off to the beach or pool. Also, the point of being at the beach or pool is to have fun, so make that your main priority. We’d just like you to look good in the process. But who are we kidding, we all know that when the sun goes down and that last beer has been drank, swim suits and bikinis are coming off anyway!
